THE PERMANENT COLLECTION

One of the museum's main purposes is the acquisition of local material culture--the objects, artifacts, and paper documents that trace the history of Auburn and Cayuga County. The materials we collect are used in exhibitions, educational programs, and research into the county's past.

The home of the permanent collection has recently been made over. As part of our museum accessibility and building restoration project, the mansion's attic (which was damaged during a 1973 fire) has been completely renovated. Changes to the space include the replacement of the roof, the addition of a climate control system, and a complete reorganization of the storage facilities.

Since the museum's exhibit space is always changing, very few pieces are on permanent display. The Tiffany Window, which is part of our historic mansion, is a notable exception.
