What to do with Household Hazardous Waste

Cayuga County provides household hazardous waste collection events for county residents, including city of Auburn residents, to properly dispose of old chemicals and outdated supplies of hazardous products.

Organizers want to remind residents that product labels containing the words "caution", "danger", "warning" or "poison" should be treated with special care. Other words on labels that can signal consumers of hazardous products include "corrosive", "toxic", "flammable" and "explosive". These wastes should be stored properly until a collection event. Please store wastes in original containers away from extreme temperatures and out of reach of children. Product labels may also state other specific precautions.

What To Bring To A HHW Collection Event:

  • Pesticides (herbicides, insecticides, fungicides)
  • Mercury & Mercury Products (ie. thermometers)
  • Adhesives
  • Polish and Waxes
  • Solvents
  • Corrosives (acids, lye)
  • Pool Chemicals
  • Driveway sealers
  • Oil-based Paint and Stains
  • Household Cleaning Products
  • Miscellaneous Vehicle Fluids
  • Home Chemistry Sets
  • Aerosol Cans that contain hazardous products


Please DO NOT Bring:

Tires, Latex Paint, Water Based Paint, Ammunition, Smoke Detectors, Medical Waste, Radioactive Waste, Explosives, Asbestos, Children or Pets.
