We have now recycled around 43,400 tires since our first event on July 12, 2003.

Over 100 million mosquitoes eliminated by this year's Tire Round Up event.

Tires collect water, which serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. A single tire lying outside can serve as a breeding spot, and can help over 100,000 mosquitoes hatch in just 2 to 4 months! Certain mosquitoes carry the West Nile Virus, which poses a health hazard to community members and animals. Removing these tires can help eliminate mosquitoes in your neighborhood.

A Special Thanks to our volunteers from the event coordinators Renee Jensen at Cornell Cooperative Extension, and Bruce Natale at County Planning. You made this event a success.

  • To the Workers and Volunteers who helped this event to run smoothly and exceed all expectations. The Cayuga County AmeriCorps, the Cayuga County Department of Planning and Development, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the Cayuga County Soil and Water Conservation District were amoung the groups represented.

  • To the Cayuga County Auxillary Police.

  • To the weekend inmates from the Cayuga County Jail who were a tremendous help unloading trucks and removing lead weights.

  • To Nucor Steel-Auburn for their innovative scrap tire-recycling program. Nucor utilizes old tires as an alternative carbon source through a process which ensures complete and clean combustion of the tires.
