Bedrock Geology

Soils along the Brook are combinations of:

  • glacial till, which is an accumulation of intermingled clay, sand, gravel and limestone,
  • glacial outwashed sand and gravel,
  • silts resulting from glacial lakes, and
  • recent deposits resulting from flooding.

Drift is glacier transported sediment. A kame is an isolated hill or area of stratified (arranged in layers) drift deposited in an opening within or between ice blocks. Till is nonsorted, nonstratified glacial drift, deposited directly from ice without reworking by meltwater. Moraine is the general term for glacier deposited landforms, in contrast to drift, which describes sediment transported by glaciers. Moraines may be hummocky or ridged landscapes.
Gravel and sand particles are more coarse than silt and clay particles. An alluvial fan usually forms where a stream leaves a steep, confining gorge and abruptly widens its cross section as it discharges into a basin such as a lake. Fans are normally built of stream gravel. Burtis Point is an example of an alluvial fan.
